last month's color
autumn ends late in my town; it starts late too, because i can never get enough of it. even clunky old parking meters seem like jewels in the light of the turning leaves and with the reflection of the dusky sunlight.

shirtdresses
I'm a big fan of the classic shirtdress, although i'm going to have to resort to making my own: tall, long waisted me can't buy "off the rack" without the waist sitting below my ribcage and the hem hitting above my knees. in addition to being long waisted, i also have toothpick legs and don't like to wave them about too much. layering a skirt under a shirt dress? - yes please!
or just always wear tights...
i digress.
so, on the sewing list for 2011: more of the same!
here's a real charmer from Jonathan Saunders' summer of '10 collection. i love the inverted box pleats. thanks to the sartorialist for giving me fashion inspiration; now i just need some extra time...

on college student fashion
i hung out on campus today. i really don't miss being surrounded by oblivious 19-year olds, glued to their cell phones. i also noticed something: Uggs. in my few short months of *not* being a student, i realized that i hadn't seen people wearing Uggs. and it dawned on me that the only people that wear Uggs with such astounding variety and regularity are college students.
and there they were! leggings and sweat pants and all.
what an assault to the senses.
i have one word of advice for you ladies.
in the REAL world, no one takes you seriously if you wear your pajamas out of the house.

fashion meltdown
random customers say to me, "oooooo, what a cute outfit"
and i say, "THESE ARE MY NORMAL CLOTHES"
(which is Lizzy-code for: "and why are you dressed like a slob")
just look at the sartorialist! everyone over on the continent is dressing like this. america is years behind the fashion, as they have been for 400 years. some things never change.
(it took me daaaaayyyyys to snap these shots. armed with low light and a 50mm on auto focus... after i got the angles i wanted, i obviously gave up on editing)

shoe porn
i'm one of those embarrassingly snobby people who brings her own silver cutlery to work (can't use the worker bees' stainless, oh no!), reads the Wall Street Journal on the weekends, won't touch PBR, and judges people by their shoes.
so this was a great visual to wake up to this morning, with my tea and china teacup, and wool cardigan to keep out the chill from the season's first rain:

of taxes and trafficking
prop 19 - the legalization of cannabis - is quite the thing around here ("here" is a college town in nor cal). although i'm not a fan myself, some of my best friends smoke recreationally, and i could go one way or the other on the legalization issue - i don't care what people do in the privacy of their own homes as long as it doesn't endanger others, especially kids.
(there's a bit of editorializing hidden in there if you care to dig for it.)
i just have one point to make.
the pro-legalizers say that a tax on marijuana will bring revenue to the state and end trafficking.
ok.
i've worked in the shipping industry for 2.5 years.
if i put myself in the growers'/distributors' shoes, do i really want to pay an almost-10% tax on 20 G's of grass that my buddy in florida wants?
not when i can take it to a retail shipping store, call it a dictionary, and for less than 1% of its value, get it to florida before noon the next day.
legalization with taxation probably won't slow down trafficking.
that's all i have to say.

the road goes ever on and... not
Derec and I drove up the park road to find the perfect place for a photoshoot. we went further than he'd ever been, and then further than I'd ever been, and then, the road stopped!
silly fool road!
so we'll just have to find another road, and another adventure

the title as a first impression
it's just a joke.
i also like Greek-based words.
it's a play on the fact that the internet seems so crammed with transitory snippets of not very important bits of peoples' lives - at least that's what my blogs have always been about.
plus it's a nod toward my interest in cheap old-fashioned thrills.
there ya go!
i'm also pleased that i can change the blog title whenever i find a better-suited one.
